What is Community Shared Agriculture

Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) is a food system model that is rooted in the relationship between farmers, shareholders and the land. Based on the idea of mutual support, CSA farmers support their shareholders by producing quality food that is nutritious, fresh, and grown using organic principles. Shareholders support their farmers by providing them with a stable income and local market for their products, usually by purchasing a share in the spring for the season ahead. The land is supported by the growing of good food using ecologically sustainable farming methods. CSA is an alternative to the conventional system of food production and distribution because shareholders share in both the bounty
and the risk of farming, while building connections with the community, food,
and the earth.

Reroot organic CSA, established in 2007, is a small community-shared agriculture project dedicated to growing delicious, healthy and safe food in ways that protect the ecological viability of the land. More than 50 types of vegetables and herbs are started in our greenhouse, and grown on land located at Mapleton’s Organic Dairy, certified organic since 1990. In 2008, reroot will grow food for 60 shareholders in its three-acre vegetable gardebn, providing a weekly harvest from mid-June until late October.
