Farming, Fun and Folk Come Together at Mapleton’s Organic Dairy

Taking Community To The Next Level

Wed, Aug 20th, 2014

Critically acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Tannis Slimmon will bring her warmth and vocal talent to Mapleton's Organic Dairy on Friday, August 29th.

Tannis has been a valued member of the folk music scene in Canada and Internationally for over 30 years. In 2008 she was honoured with the Contemporary Vocalist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards for her album Lucky Blue. She has also worked with Canadian legends including the Rheostatics, the Barenaked Ladies and the Grievous Angels.

Having grown up on a farm in the prairies of western Canada, it's expected she'll be right at home as she performs at Mapleton's Organic Dairy farm later this month.

You would think that Mapleton's perhaps has enough to do in the summer as it tends organic crops and produces organic ice cream. But for owner Martin DeGroot, it's important to host such events.

"It's so critical that people connect with farms again and understand where their food comes from," says Martin. "We welcome visitors each day, but an event adds to the excitement of a visit."

The importance of community has always been evident in rural communities. "Our farm events are an opportunity for our friends and neighbours to come together. Sometimes these friends live nearby, sometimes they come from urban areas such as Toronto or Guelph on their way to cottage country. We welcome them all," says Martin.

In addition to live music, Mapleton's will also be offering wagon rides. Attendees can also visit the barn animals and watch as the cows are milked with Mapleton's new robotic milking system. Other activities include a cedar hedge maze and farmers golf. There is a $5 entertainment cover charge for the event.

Mapleton's will also have available for purchase freshly barbequed organic hamburgers and sausages, as well as many cool treats including organic frozen yogurt and organic ice cream.

Friday at the Farm featuring Tannis Slimmon takes place on Friday, August 29th at Mapleton's Organic Dairy located at 8548 Wellington Road 7.
